PRESS RELEASE – 6 November 2008
FM World reveals the pioneers of the FM sector
FM World, the award-winning fortnightly magazine of the British Institute of Facilities Management, has revealed the names of the pioneers of the facilities management sector.
The initiative, sponsored by FM service provider Sodexo, was launched in September, to discover who has helped to create and steer the industry and has had a major impact on its development over the past 30 years.
From consultants to directors of FM, from the private sector to the public and not-for-profit sectors and academia, our aim is to spotlight the top 20 professionals who have made the FM industry what it is today.
FM World received almost 50 nominations from across the industry and, through a formal judging process, narrowed them down to the top 20. They work in a mixture of in-house, service provider and academic roles in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Several are now retired and two have since passed away.
The 20 industry pioneers will be individually profiled and photographed in the 18 December issue of FM World (available online at fm-world.co.uk from mid-December) and also celebrated their achievement at an exclusive party last night held in the Globe Theatre on London’s South Bank.
At the event they were welcomed by FM World editor Cathy Hayward and BIFM chairman Iain Murray while Andy Scorgie, the Globe’s facilities manager, talked about some of the challenges he faces at the site.
“Having written about the FM sector for almost five years, it’s incredibly exciting for me to see in this room some of the people who have made the profession what it is today,” said Hayward. “Congratulations on being recognised by your peers as pioneers of our sector.”
The 20 pioneers of FM are:
Keith Alexander
Billy Allan
Professor Franklin Becker
Derek Butcher

Frank Duffy
Ian Fielder
Bill Heath
John Jack
Lucy Jeynes
Oliver Jones
